MARVEL COMICS

CAPTAIN AMERICA #34

This is the issue that everyone has been talking about for months. Steve Rogers has been dead for almost a year and the time has come for a new Captain America and it looks like the Winter Soldier is the man to take over the mantle. Shipping with two covers, this is going to be the most important issue of Cap since the Earth shattering issue #25. If you’ve been looking for a jumping on point for Captain America this is it.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #24

We’re almost at the end for Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men. The ride has been full of incredible surprises, fascinating character development and the types of delays that make me pull my hair out. This is the last issue of the series for Joss and John Cassaday but there will be a giant sized finale in February to finish up any dangling plotlines and give Joss one more chance to write Kitty Pride. This book brought me back to the X-Men after being away a long time. I look forward to seeing what Warren Ellis does with Astonishing later this year but I will look back at the Whedon issues as the reason I started to care about the X-Men again. I mean, he made Cyclops interesting. CYCLOPS!

Hey Gang, it looks like another medium sized week for comics. Luckily there are some pretty good titles shipping including New Warriors from Marvel, The Sword from Image and World of Warcraft from DC. Here are some previews of some good looking stuff coming in Wednesday. Stay tuned after the Countdown themed commercial break for some reviews from last week. If you have any comments, questions or complaints shoot us an e-mail and let us know.

These books are scheduled to ship Wednesday January 9th.

MARVEL COMICS

HULK #1

This is the book Marvel has been hyping the past few months as INCREDIBLE. I can’t help but think that with the creative team of Jeph Loeb and Ed Mcguinnes it probebly will be. The fallout after World War Hulk has left Jennifer Walters and Len Sampson a little off balance. We get to see the two of them together tracking the Hulk and then a last page surprise that some folks may not see coming.

SPIDER-MAN: ONE MORE DAY

Posted by Tommy On January - 2 - 2008

smonemoreday.jpgIt’s finally here. The end of the storyline many people have been dreading since it was announced. Amazing Spider-Man #545, the final chapter of One More Day. I can’t remember my first Spidey comic but I do know i’ve been following the adventures of the wall crawler for more than two decades. Over the years I’ve spent more money than I care to count on things like toys, statues, Christmas ornaments and a tattoo so I feel safe in saying that I am a Spider-Man fan. Much like many of my friends I have dreaded the One More Day story arc because it was rumored to undo Spider-Man continuity all the way back to 1987 when Pete and MJ tied the knot. I’ll say up front, the rumors are true. The end is nigh (for that whole marriage thing anyway) and an era is truly over. Now the questions I keep asking are “why?” and “what does this mean?” The why of it is pretty straightforward. The decision to dissolve Spider-Man’s marriage came down from editorial, specifically from Joe Quesada. There are valid arguments to be made that storylines that come from an editorial directive and not grown organically out of the story itself are almost always bad. I don’t disagree with that and I won’t try to defend it. So why review this book if I disliked it so much? Read the rest of this entry »
