So, besides running my lucrative Brazilian Empire, I’m also going to school full time. I’m a criminal justice major and unfortunately these aren’t the most difficult courses in the world. Most of my classes are taught by cops or lawyers. I like the classes taught by the lawyers but I can’t stand the classes taught by the cops. I’m not very fond of them to begin with.
This semester I decided to take some classes that challenged me a little. One of those classes is Intro to Philosophy. Right now we’re learning about Existentialism and Determinism. In a nutshell Existentialism is the idea that you can do whatever the hell you want and Determinism means that all of your decisions are played out for you and your decisions are dependant on other factors. But anyway! This got me thinking about our freedom of choice. Can we truly be existential? Or are all of our decisions already made for us. A lot of my friends thrive on the face that they are non-conformists and free willed individuals. But they all tend to look and act alike. So it may be true that they are not doing whatever is “popular” but they are still conforming to a stereotype. These people try so hard to do what is “against the grain” that they become something “fake”. Enemy No. 1 to these so called originals is the Lindsay Lohan’s and Paris Hiltons of the world. But aren’t the Lindsay’s and Paris Hiltons being more honest then anyone else? They never claim to be trend setters. They like something because it is “cool” or “hot”. So what if it’s trendy? Isn’t it better to fit in and be accepted? I guess the answers to those questions depend on who you’re asking. If you ask my friends, they would probably rather kill themselves then conform to societies expectations.
I guess the idea that I’m trying to get across is that no one is truly original. And if you do something original, it’s only original the first time you do it. And chances are it’s been done before. Stop trying to live up to some image and be yourself. And if you’re one of those non-conformist kids: Stop worrying about what is popular and going against the grain. If you like something then enjoy it no matter what anyone thinks. I’ll end my thought with someone who’s a lot better with words then I could ever dream to be.
So, that’s my rant for the week. I’ll try to keep this up. Since Stevo and Tommy got off of their lazy asses, I guess I should too.
