So, we’re trying to get some audience participation. I thought I would pose a question I’ve been pondering. As I mentioned before, I am a Sirius Radio subscriber. One of the DJ’s has this idea that flipflops are Metal. He asks most of his guests what they think. So, I’m posing the questions to you guys. Register and let us know what you think.

The idea of creating a human/animal hybrid is older than civilization. Ancient cultures saw their gods as some sort of amalgamation of man and beast and worshiped these monstrous deities for centuries before more refined humanized versions of these benevolent higher powers showed up to preach love, understanding and genocide. It almost seems as if it is designed in our DNA that man and best should be able to merge as a single better creation. Current science is trying to force working animal parts into broken human bodies, giving people chances at life they wouldn’t have had normally. The cloning of animals is a big step towards a day when things like heart diseased and lung cancer are cured as simply as appendicitis. Elephantmen takes a closer look at the more military applications of these wondrous scientific advances and the cultural byproduct of using a man/animal hybrid as tools of war. The real questions about these manimals comes when the war is over and everyone asks themselves “what do we do with killing machines when all the killing is done?”

Visually this book ranges from stunning futuristic cityscapes to murky underwater fights to the confusion and horror of being born in a lab that routinely tortures you to create a better killer. One would think the conflicting art styles would leave the reader with a bit of a disconnect. I know that I have been completely taken out of a multi part story if the art team changes mid plot line. Because of the out of time feeling of many of the books this never becomes a problem.

Elephantmen is science fiction at its very best, a morality tale cloaked under the guise of futuristic noir. The characters are richly detailed and I don’t just mean on the art side. We get to delve into the fractured psyches of these people who were taught from birth that they’re only function in life was to kill. How does a person, and lets face it, these elephantmen are all too human, come to grips with something like that? Not since Joshua on the too quickly canceled Dark Angel have I seen animal men with such human flaws and characteristics, not just as an allegory or a morality tale, but as a twisted mirror reflecting our own humanity back at us from a strangely familiar perspective.

Who Put the Emo in my Metal?

Posted by Calypso Burkez On August - 23 - 2007

There’s a new epidemic plaguing our society. It’s not something you can catch or spread to someone else. So, what is this horrible new affliction? EMO!!!! What is Emo, you ask? Cause it really does sound like a disease. Basically, Emo is short for Emotional Rock. The origin of this genre doesn’t really matter. So I’m not going to waste time talking about it. If you want the Wikipedia definition go here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo-core The gist of it is that Emo SUCKS!!! So you’re probably asking, “Who cares? You don’t have to listen to it.” Well, that has been totally true. But now Emo is infecting other types of music. Now, I didn’t care when Emo invaded punk and turned it into punk/pop. I didn’t really mind when every other song on the radio sounded exactly the same. (I have Sirius…more choices.) So, what did piss me off? When someone puts Emo in my Metal. Grant it, Metal is very emotional music. But it’s raw emotion. It’s primitive in nature. Listen to Sepultura and you’ll understand what I mean. But recently bands have been infusing Metal with Emo choruses and Emo singers. When you first here one of these songs, it sounds like a kick-ass metal song. But then those fuckers put some whiny-ass shit in the middle. There’s nothing wrong with mixing screaming and singing. A lot of bands do it well. Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, and even Mudvayne (Yeah…they’re kinda metal) make it work. They all have amazing, versatile front men. I just cannot stand when the chorus sounds like a fucking Simple Plan song.

Metal is no place for whining!

Now, I love Shadows Fall, but you guys are partially to blame for this shit! Stevo and I went to a Shadows Fall show a few months ago and both of their opening acts where Emo/Metal or whatever the hell they call themselves. The only thing that saved the opening bands was a killer set by a relatively new and unknown band called Beneath the Sky. I’m sure you hear about them from Stevo or me later. Shadows Fall was amazing!!! They are a true metal band. They don’t need to tour with a band like Autumn to Ashes. If I would have closed my eyes throughout that show I don’t think I could have been able to tell the difference between the two opening bands. I guess my biggest gripe with that is that there are so many good metal bands out there and the crying pussies are getting all of the attention. Just please stay away from my Metal. If you can’t do that, then stay away from my Metal Shows. And most of all stop whining!
